Dyslexic writers excel

blytonIn the latest copy of Dyslexia in the 21st Century, Donald Scloss suggests that dyslexic people often excel as writers and authors.

This may come as a surprise to those that think that dyslexia is a difficulty with literacy, but we increasingly know that this is a misleading oversimplification. Let’s look at the actual evidence. Dyslexic screen writers famously include Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, Stephen Cannell, Billy Bob Thornton, Guy Ritchie, and Sylvester Stallone. In fact, some of the most famous writers and poets are known to be dyslexic. These include Benjamin Zephaniah, John Irving, A.A Gill, Philip Schultz, Lynda La Plante, Henry Winkler, Louise Tondeur and Octavia Butler.  (Many other deceased authors such as Agatha Christie, Enid Blyton, F.Scott Fitzgerald, W.B Yeats, Roald Dahl and Gustave Flaubert are also believed to have been dyslexic). More recently, Sally Gardener won this year’s Costa Children’s Book Award and the Carnegie Medal with Maggot Moon. Among unpublished writers, R.K.Lawrence has just won joint first prize in the Litarium Steampunk Short Story competition with Victor Hart Case 1.

  1. I particularly like the alleged ripost from Agatha Christie on being asked how she could write properly when she was dyslexic: ‘That’s what editors are for my dear!’
