I’m not a big sports fan, and the most exercise I get is a long walk, or climbing one flight of stairs to reach my office in Dorset House! But I can appreciate the power of human endeavour and the sheer grit and determination in endurance and other sports, so I jumped (but not very high!) at the chance to join the team of marshals at the inaugural Bournemouth Marathon Festival.
It was still dark when I left home, but it was worth getting up before dawn just to see the sun rise over the Isle of Wight. I had an absolutely fantastic day and enjoyed chatting with many of the spectators and visitors.
You may be interested to know that around 9000 runners took part across the two days, and as if one marathon is not enough, some people ran in more than one of the various races. I met the family of one chap who entered the 10K on Saturday, then ran the half marathon, followed by the full marathon on Sunday! I gave him an extra loud clap as he ran by (twice!).
In a much more sedate role, I was very proud to represent my home town of Bournemouth at this brand new event, and I am delighted to see that the countdown to next year’s event has already begun.
